In Gina Gionfriddo's BECKY SHAW, a newlywed couple fixes up two romantically challenged friends: wife's best friend, meet husband's sexy and strange new co-worker. When an evening calculated to bring happiness takes a dark turn, crisis and comedy ensue in this wickedly funny play that asks what we owe the people we love and the strangers who land on our doorstep.
All roles are available and casting is open, and newcomers to Theatre of Dare are welcome and encouraged.
Here are the roles available:
MAX - (male 25-35) Suzanna's adopted "brother". He has a very utilitarian view of love and family, but feels loyalty to Suzanna and her mother. Max overcompensates to fit into the upper class. He is not nurturing, has little empathy, he's selfish and caustic.
SUZANNA - (female 25-35) In love with both Max, her ‘adopted’ brother and closest friend, and Andrew, her husband. Confused by her emotions and still grieving the loss of her father.
SUSAN - (female 50+) She has MS and uses a cane, she is attractive, but there's a heaviness to her; the fatigue of endless fatigue. Her mind is sharp and she's cultivated a forceful manner to compensate for her physical disability. She is a woman who wants things the way she wants them, and is full of tough love and honesty.
ANDREW - (male 25-35) Suzanna's husband, they are newlyweds. He is an aspiring writer who has been forced into an Office Manager job. Max describes him as "indie rock." He is the youngest of the group, and you can feel that. He is laid back, a "nice guy", easy to be around. He rushes to the side of women in trouble, and it seems to be as much for his benefit as it is for theirs.
BECKY - (female 25-35) Andrew's work friend, set up with Max on a date. Bit lost in life, her family doesn't speak to her, she works a temp job and doesn't have much money. She appears delicate, but has the capacity for deep darkness and manipulation. Susan says "You may have been victimized in your life; you may be a complete con-artist...My sense is that you fall somewhere in between."
DIRECTOR’S NOTE: After reading these descriptions, if you know of anyone in your life that may fit these parts, PLEASE BRING THEM IN! The best part of getting people to audition is word of mouth! Hope to see you all there!!!
