Cabaret is a musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff, based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from the short novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with 32-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles. A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. The club serves as a metaphor for ominous political developments in late Weimar Germany. The 1966 original Broadway production became a hit, inspiring numerous subsequent productions in London and New York, as well as the 1972 film of the same name. The original show won eight Tonys in 1967, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and a Best Actor award for Joel Grey, who played the Emcee on Broadway and in the movie.

When it comes to audition night, we will be having people cold read from the script, do a few simple dance steps taught by our choreographer, and sing us at least part of a song. If there's a specific role in Cabaret you're looking for, feel free to choose a song from the show to sing a capella. Otherwise, just sing us a little something that shows us your range.

Rehearsals will be held in the evening hours three to four nights a week between January 16 and March 15, although not every character will be needed every night. Performances will be March 16 17, 23, and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and March 18 & 25 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will be inside the film theatre at Roanoke Island Festival Park.

All roles are available and casting is open, and newcomers to Theatre of Dare are welcome and encouraged. Also, some of the minor roles may be doubled up, including the Kit Kat Klub ladies. Please plan on staying for the entire audition time.
