James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

ROLES AVAILABLE:

Leads:

The Baker: Male, Age 25-55. Vocal Range top: G4 bottom: Ab2. A harried and insecure baker who is simple & loving, yet protective of his family. He is imperfect but strives to be a good person and do right by the people in his life. Above all, his wish is to create a happy life for his wife and be a better father than his own. He is to be played more like a modern man than that of a fairy tale character. He is the heart of the show and the audience’s connection from the fairy tale stories being presented to the themes of their everyday lives.

The Baker’s Wife: Female, Age 25-50. Vocal Range top: G5 bottom: F3. Determined and bright, she leads a simple yet (mostly) satisfying life. She is headstrong and capable but will she ever be fully satisfied? Her ultimate wish is to live a life of royalty but that is just not realistic so she would happily settle for a child of her own. She is to be played more like a modern woman than that of a fairy tale character. She is also the audience’s connection from the fairy tale stories being presented to the themes of their everyday lives.

The Witch: Female, Age 35-70. Vocal Range top: G5 bottom: F3. Sarcastic, aggressive, & jaded but not inherently evil. She is tough, intelligent, and powerful. Her one weakness is her daughter Rapunzel who she is fiercely overprotective of. Her wish is to finally be enough for her daughter and for everyone else to leave them alone. We are looking for a dynamic actor who can teeter between over the top absurdity and grounded emotional depth.

Cinderella: Female, Age 20-35. Vocal Range top: G5 bottom: G3. A young earnest maiden who has been mistreated most of her life but it has not broken her. She is soft, thoughtful, & caring but not weak. Her wish is to find her happily ever after, no matter what that may look like.

Jack: Male, Age 10-25. Vocal Range top: G4 bottom: B2. A well meaning but naive farm boy turned accidental giantslayer. He is adventurous, bright-eyed, & energetic; if not a bit dimwitted. His wish is to become the man of the house and be able to provide a decent life for his mother and his cow. The character goes through some emotional maturing and loss of innocence throughout the show so the actor must be able to authentically play both the naive and the more mature sides of the character.

Little Red Riding Hood: Female, Age 10-25. Vocal Range top: F5 bottom: Bb3. A spoiled & hungry young girl. She is strong-willed, quick-witted, & curious while also being unaware of the evils of the world around her. Her wish is to know it all. The character goes through some emotional maturing and loss of innocence throughout the show so the actor must be able to authentically play both the naive and the more mature sides of the character.

Supporting Roles:

Rapunzel: Female, Age 15-35. Vocal Range top: A5 bottom: B3. A beautiful yet odd young maiden who has grown up in a tower sheltered from the outside world. She has a complicated relationship with her mother, The Witch, whom she loves but resents. She is awkward, frail, and at times crazed, but who wouldn’t be after being locked in a tower your whole life? Her ultimate wish is to escape the room she’s known and experience the beauties of the world she believes she has missed.

Cinderella’s Prince: Male, Age 20-45. Vocal Range top: Gb4 bottom: Bb2. Handsome & charming but vain & entitled. He loves the chase of a new conquest but has a tendency to find a new one as soon as he gets what he wants. His wish is for the world to never run out of beautiful maidens for him to seduce. After all, he was raised to be charming, not sincere. Often doubles as The Wolf.

Rapunzel’s Prince: Male, Age 20-45. Vocal Range top: E4 bottom: C#3. Like his brother, he is also handsome & charming, vain & entitled. He shares in his brother’s wish for there always to be plenty of women to agonize over.

Jack’s Mother: Female, Age 35-65. Vocal Range top: Gb5 bottom: Bb3. Homely, poor, & exhausted but loving & fiercely protective; Jack’s Mother only wishes to give her son the best life possible but the life of a single mother is no walk in the park.

Featured Roles:

The Narrator: Any Gender, Any Age. Minimal singing. Strong speaking voice & stage presence. The storyteller. Wishes to make it to the end of the story. Often doubles as The Mysterious Man.

The Mysterious Man: Male, Age 50-80. Minimal singing. He’s just that. Mysterious. Maybe a crazed man who lives in the woods? Maybe a spirit? Maybe connected to the characters? Maybe not? He appears sporadically throughout the show, mostly speaking in riddles. His wish is also up for interpretation. Often doubles as The Narrator.

Cinderella’s Stepmother: Female, Age 45-70. Vocal Range top: F#5 bottom: A3. Haughty, demanding, & cruel but lowkey fabulous at the same time. She has a great disdain for Cinderella and wishes for her daughters to marry into royalty.

Cinderella’s Stepsisters (Florinda & Lucinda): Female, Age 20-40. Vocal Range top: Ab5 bottom: C4. Callous, vain, & obnoxious. Follow in their mother’s footsteps of abusing Cinderella. They wish to be the belles of the ball & woo The Prince. Looking for 2 comedic actresses with great chemistry with one another.

The Wolf: Male, Age 20-55. Vocal Range top: Gb4 bottom: Bb2. Hungry & insatiable, unnerving yet oddly charming. A true predator. All he wishes is to feed his never ending hunger. Often doubles as Cinderella’s Prince.

Cinderella’s Mother: Female, Age 30-60. Vocal Range top: F4 bottom: E4. A kind & maternal spirit looking over the child she left behind. Her wish is for her daughter’s wishes to come true. A cameo role for a talented soprano. Often doubles as The Giant & Granny.

The Giant: Female, Age 30-70. Non Singing/Voice Over role. A strong, mourning wife who just wishes to avenge her husband’s death. Often doubles as Cinderella’s Mother & Granny.

The Steward: Male, Age 20-70. Ensemble Singing Only. Uppity and trigger-happy but ultimately cowardly. Hired hand to Cinderella’s Prince. Probably wishes to be royalty himself but will settle being as close to it as he can get.

Cinderella’s Father: Male, Age 50-80. Ensemble Singing Only. Grumpy and over it. He just wishes to be left alone with a bottle of wine. Comical cameo role for an older actor.

Granny: Female, Age 50-80. Ensemble Singing Only. Feisty and aggressive old broad. She has been through it all so don’t mess with her. Her wish is for there to be less wolves in these woods. Comical cameo role for an older actor. Often doubles as Cinderella’s Mother & The Giant.

Sleeping Beauty/Tech Crew: Female, Age 15-35. Non speaking role that would ideally double as part of the Running Crew. Her wish is to go back to sleep.

Snow White/Tech Crew: Female, Age 15-35. Non speaking role that would ideally double as part of the Running Crew. Her wish is also to go back to sleep.
