Ever since their brother Andrey gambled away the family fortune, Olga, Masha, and Irina have been doomed to the boredom of the Russian countryside. One day soon, they hope, they’ll return home to Moscow and live the exciting lives they were always meant to have.

 

When the military comes to town, bringing with them variety, entertainment, and a whole lot of chaos, Moscow feels closer than ever and it seems the sisters’ luck is about to change. In this contemporary twist on Chekhov’s Three Sisters, one delightfully dysfunctional family navigates the absurdity of class, culture, and love.

AUDITION INFORMATION:

Auditions will be held November 9 and 10 at 6 p.m. at the Theatre of Dare Playhouse, located at 105 Pan Ridge Court in Point Harbor, Unit 3. Those auditioning will be asked to read several scenes from the play.

Monolouges are not necessary but are extremely welcome.  Our characters are a bunch of fast-talking, barely-listening, selfish individuals with outbursts of comedy, desperation, and emotional cruelty throughout.  So, if you are planning to prepare, prepare something that shows range and quick shifts.

 

Russian accents are NOT required. Accents are tricky to get right, and the characters talk fast and over each other frequently.  For our audience sake, and our actors sanity, we will not be using accents.

ROLES AVAILABLE:

The Prozorovs:

OLGA SERGEYEVNA PROZOROVA – Female, 28. The oldest sister. A school teacher. Later, headmistress. Unmarried. Plagued by migraines and a martyrdom complex. Ferociously loving. Reliably self-pitying.

MARIA SERGEYEVNA KULYGINA (MASHA) – Female, 25. The middle sister. A trained concert pianist. Doesn’t do that anymore. Or anything, really. Married to Kulygin, whom she hates. Moody, spiky, dreamy.

IRINA SERGEYEVNA PROZOROVA – Female, 20. The youngest sister. The only one capable of anything close to optimism. Unfortunately, also capable of deep despair and a wildly childish sense of entitlement.

ANDREY SERGEYEVICH PROZOROV – Male, 30. The brother. An intellectual. A violinist. A willing volunteer for emotional castration at the hands of the women in his life.

NATALIA IVANOVNA (NATASHA) – Female, 28. Andrey’s love interest. Later, his wife. Well intentioned, if uncouth. Later, conniving. Insecure.

FYODOR ILYICH KULYGIN – Male, Late 30s. Masha’s husband. A Latin teacher. Maddeningly officious. Desperately in love with his wife.
 

The Soldiers:

ALEXANDER IGNATYCH VERSHININ – Male, 44. Lieutenant-colonel. Married, with two little girls. Loves philosophizing. Loves hating his life. Loves Masha.

BARON NIKOLAI LVOVICH TUZENBACH – Male, Early 30s. Lieutenant. An honorary member of the Prozorov family. Seems pretty gay. Is not. In love with Irina.

CAPTAIN VASSILY VASILYEVICH SOLYONY – Male, 30s. Captain. So socially awkward that he can come across as aggressive. Also in love with Irina.

IVAN ROMANICH CHEBUTYKIN – Male, 60. Army doctor. Long-standing friend of the family. Still in love with the sisters’ dead mother. A drunk.
 

The Old People:

ANFISA – Female, 81. The sisters’ former nanny, now their servant. Not great at what she does since she is close to death. Sweet. Tired.

FERAPONT – Male, 80s. Door-keeper at the city council offices. Hard of hearing. Done with living, pretty much. Knows a lot of trivia.​​
