Theatre of Dare Spends Its Summer in Greater Tuna

Mike Blanchard and Leah Cribb play small-town radio DJs (and a whole host of others) in Theatre of Dare’s production of ‘Greater Tuna’, opening June 24 in Kitty Hawk
KITTY HAWK - Theatre of Dare invites audiences to take a trip to Tuna, Texas, this summer with its production of Greater Tuna, a fast-paced comedy that has delighted theatergoers for more than four decades.
Performing Wednesday and Thursday evenings from June 24 through August 13, Greater Tuna features actors Mike Blanchard and Leah Cribb as radio DJs Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie, who serve as guides through the eccentric world of Tuna, cknown as "the third smallest town" in Texas. In addition to the radio hosts, Blanchard
and Cribb portray a colorful cast of the town's residents through a whirlwind of character and costume changes.
Written by Jaston Williams, Ed Howard, and Joe Sears, Greater Tuna is a madcap romp that skewers small-town morals and mores with sharp wit and outrageous humor.
While the production is undeniably a comedy, director Vivian Stem notes that its satire remains strikingly relevant.
"We play them over-the-top," says Stem. "But these characters, as outrageous and offensive as they are, will be familiar to many people."
Since its premiere in 1981, Greater Tuna has become an American theatrical classic, celebrated for its clever humor, memorable characters, and pointed observations about community life, prejudice, and hypocrisy.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on June 24 and 25, July 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30, and August 5, 6, 12 and 13.
Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online at theatreofdareobx.com or at the door, subject to availability. The production is rated PG-13 for adult themes and language.
