Theatre of Dare Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of 'Jaws' with 'The Shark Is Broken'

Kevin Walker, Logan Stem and Terry Schappert play actors Roy Schieder, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw as they shoot the movie ‘Jaws’ on board The Orca in 1975.
KITTY HAWK - This summer, Theatre of Dare is inviting Outer Banks visitors and residents to get out of the water and go behind the scenes of one of the most iconic films ever made. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Jaws, the community theater will present The Shark Is Broken, a critically acclaimed play that offers a hilarious and intimate look at the real-life drama behind the filming of Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic.

Performances will take place on Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m., from June 25 through August 6.

"So many people have this Jaws moment, and will enthusiastically tell you about when they first saw the film and their fear of the ocean after it," said director Emily Gomez. "I want my audience to connect with this play through those memories and experiences."

Set aboard the infamous fishing boat The Orca, The Shark Is Broken captures the tension, humor, and chaos that unfolded as actors Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, and Richard Dreyfuss waited out endless production delays during the troubled shoot. While the mechanical shark refused to cooperate, tempers flared, egos clashed, and unexpected friendships formed.

The production stars Terry Schappert as the hard-drinking Robert Shaw, Kevin Walker as the calm and seasoned Roy Scheider, and Logan Stem as the young and neurotic Richard Dreyfuss.

"Three bored actors with large egos on a tiny boat, what could go wrong?" laughed Stem. "It makes for a lot of comedy, and more than a few insults and physical altercations."

The Shark Is Broken offers a unique blend of humor, drama, and nostalgia, giving audiences a fresh perspective on the making of what would become the world’s first big summer blockbuster.

“The Shark is Broken” will take the stage on June 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, and August 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Theatre of Dare, 3848 N. Croatan Highway in Kitty Hawk. Tickets are available online at theatreofdareobx.com or at the door, subject to availability. This play is rated R for adult language and subject matter.
