Theatre of Dare Goes Looking for Love in 'Significant Other'

Brandy Hayes, Adara Huls, Evan Tillett and Paris Murray play four BFFs in Theatre of Dare's 'Significant Other', opening in Kitty Hawk March 28.

KITTY HAWK - From Shakespeare to Sondheim, the search for love has been fertile
theatrical ground for eons. But in Theatre of Dare’s upcoming production of Significant
Other,
that same search leads to an existential crisis.

“I think the big theme here is dealing with life when life isn’t working out like you
planned,” says director Kim Plyer. “It’s about struggling with the changes in relationships
that naturally occur as we get older.”

For Jordan Berman (Evan Tillett), those changes involve his three best friends (Brandy
Hayes, Adara Huls and Paris Murray), who find love and get married one by one while
Jordan’s relationships with a coworker (Logan Stem) and an old flame (Matt Gabbard)
go nowhere.

“Jordan’s turning 30, his friends are getting married and drifting away, and he’s not
getting anywhere in his own love life,” says Tillett. “I think it’s something that anyone
who’s stayed single in their 30s can relate to. It’s the age-old story of ‘always a
bridesmaid, never a bride.’”

Despite empathetic counseling from his well-meaning grandmother (Debbie Taylor),
Jordan’s romantic frustration boils over into a lengthy showstopping emotional rant that
is both hilarious and heartbreaking.

“This is definitely not your typical romantic comedy”, says Plyer, who also had a hand in
directing the time-traveling love story in January’s Now and Then. “But I think it will ring
true for a lot of people, and I hope our audiences will enjoy experiencing Jordan’s
journey in this play.”

‘Significant Other’’ will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March. 28, 29, and April 3, 4 and 5,
with matinees March 30 and April 6 at 2 p.m. All performances will be at Theatre of
Dare in Kitty Hawk, 3848 N. Croatan Highway. Tickets are available here and at the door, subject to availability. This show is rated ‘R’ for strong adult language and sexual innuendo.
